Martian, but not so Malefic

Billie Eilish is one of my favorite artists of all time. Her music is this rare blend of pain and beauty, carried by a voice that doesn’t need to belt to be powerful. Instead, she sings with a gentle, almost otherworldly quality—soft, ethereal, yet cutting straight to the core. What makes her artistry so unique is that she isn’t chasing fame for its own sake; her songs feel more like intimate confessions than performances. Every track is drenched in vulnerability and raw emotion, turning her personal struggles into something hauntingly universal. She’s still so young, and I hope she'll continue to make music well into the future.

When I first started writing this post, I didn’t realize there were two different birth times for Billie Eilish floating around online. So I initially went with the one that seemed more commonly used—11:30 AM—not knowing that a verified birth time had surfaced in 2024 from her actual birth certificate. Turns out, the 12:17 PM birth time is the real deal.

Using the earlier, unofficial time made her chart look super Jupiterian, with Pisces rising and Jupiter sitting pretty in her 5th house of creativity, performance, and artistic expression. It felt like such a perfect fit, too—Jupiter in the 5th? Come on, that’s textbook for someone with Billie’s level of talent and visibility. I even went on about how serendipitous it was for her to have such a well-placed benefic in the "House of Good Fortune."

But by the time I discovered the corrected birth time, I was already deep into the analysis—and honestly, I was kind of shocked by how dramatically her chart changed. With the 12:17 PM time, her Ascendant shifts to Aries, which makes Mars her chart ruler. And instead of a strong, exalted Jupiter lighting up the 5th house, we now have Mars in Pisces, tucked away in the 12th house—a much more hidden and complex placement, often associated with subconscious drives, isolation, or behind-the-scenes activity.

Anyway, from this point on, I’m using the verified 12:17 PM birth time. It’s got a Rodden Rating of AA, which is as official as it gets in astrology, so I’m not about to argue with that.

Let’s unpack Billie’s Mars-ruled chart, shall we? One thing I can say is, the benefic energy there is stronger than meets the eye.

She’s an Eclipse Baby

Billie Eilish was born on December 18, 2001 at 12:17 pm in Los Angeles, California (Rodden Rating: AA), right in the middle of eclipse season. In fact, her birth fell in between 2 eclipses—just 4 days after a solar eclipse and 12 days before a lunar eclipse.

That solar eclipse took place in Sagittarius, landing directly between her Sun and Venus. That’s no small thing. Solar eclipses often mark fresh starts, big bursts of energy, and fated turning points. People born under them tend to have a sense of destiny, undergoing multiple transformations as life unfolds. They can radiate a larger-than-life aura, heightened intuition, and a drive to do things their own way.

With Venus wrapped up in the mix, Billie’s chart gets an extra dose of charm, creativity, and magnetic appeal. This combo suggests someone who naturally embraces new beginnings, follows her passions, and stands out—sometimes to the point of making others uncomfortable. Solar eclipse babies aren’t built for blending in. They’re pioneers, instigators, and disruptors.

It’s hard to deny that Billie has never fit the mold. From a young age, she carried an intrepid, almost fearless energy. In an interview with British Vogue, she reflected on how people used to label her a rebel:

“When I would hear people comment that I was only 16 and not fitting in with the stereotype—that I was a rebel or whatever—I remember being really confused because I didn’t see it that way. I just felt like I was doing what I thought was cool. I was not intentionally trying to break any mould or rules or change music. I kind of just stayed true to what I liked and what I wanted.

That’s eclipse energy in action—doing what feels authentic, and in the process, shifting the culture around you.

Eclipse Season Hits Different for Billie

Whenever eclipse season comes around (that’s every 6 months), it tends to be especially potent for Billie, especially when the sign and degree of the eclipse is close to one of her personal planets. Eclipses can stir up sudden shifts, chaos, or breakthroughs, and for her, they hit close to home.

That Sagittarius solar eclipse from her birth was just 4 degrees from her South Node. In traditional astrology, the South Node is tied to release, detachment, and endings, even loss. Interestingly, her South Node also sits in the prominent 10th house of career and public image, and it’s exactly conjunct her MC and conjunct her Sun. This is undeniably strong South Node energy, and it suggests that Billie approaches her career with a sense of non-attachment. She can walk away if it ever feels right—her identity isn’t locked into “fame at all costs.”

We’ve already seen this play out. In 2021, at just 19, she told the BBC in her documentary Billie Eilish: Up Close that she’d even considered retiring early:

“I don't know, I was thinking about that. I don't really know. I think that I thought I would want to [retire].”

That’s the South Node talking—success is there, but it’s never clung to.

Billie’s chart makes it clear: she’s wired to do things her way, with eclipse energy pushing her toward constant reinvention. Whether she keeps evolving within music or branches out into something else entirely, her path will likely continue to unfold with that same fated, larger-than-life quality.

Chart Ruler Mars in Pisces in the 12th House

Billie’s an Aries Rising with Mars in the 12th, making her more of a private fighter, a creative and emotional warrior. Someone who might not always wear their ambition or struggles on their sleeve, but who’s constantly working through things beneath the surface—and often emerges stronger, wiser, and more self-aware for it. Mars in Pisces isn’t loud or aggressive—it tends to act in more subtle, intuitive, and behind-the-scenes ways. In the 12th house, which rules things like the unconscious mind, solitude, and healing, Mars can represent private battles, inner strength, or a drive that operates mostly out of public view. It’s not an easy placement—it can feel like your energy or motivation gets stuck in the fog—but it also gives a strong inner life and a lot of compassion.

12th House Mental Health Struggles

So her chart ruler Mars resides in the hidden 12th house, and yet Mars also rules her 1st house of identity, meaning these inner battles are inseparable from how she experiences and expresses herself in the world.

True to this symbolism, Billie has been remarkably candid about her lifelong challenges with depression and the ways fame has at times deepened her sense of disconnection from ordinary life. Rather than denying or hiding these struggles, she acknowledges them as part of her reality, integrating them into her sense of self. This acceptance reflects a powerful manifestation of Mars in the 12th: the courage to confront what is often unseen or unspoken.

Billie also takes an active role in managing her well-being, channeling her Mars energy into constructive outlets. She has shared how grounding experiences—whether it’s something as simple as grocery shopping or spending time with close friends—help keep her tethered to everyday life. She has also been open about the benefits of therapy and the invaluable support of her family, both of which provide her with tools to navigate her inner landscape.

With Mars ruling her identity yet dwelling in the 12th house, Billie’s journey illustrates how personal struggles can become part of one’s unique strength and authenticity. Her willingness to speak openly about mental health not only empowers her but also resonates deeply with fans who see their own battles reflected in hers.

Team Eilish: The Power of Jupiter in Cancer

Billie Eilish’s chart beautifully illustrates the blessing of Jupiter exalted in Cancer, placed in her 4th house of home, parents, and roots. As Demetra George explains in Ancient Astrology in Theory and Practice (Vol. 1), an exalted planet is lifted up, it “receives the power of elevation to great heights of good fortune where it can receive honor, glory, recognition, and respect.” The 4th house represents the foundation of one’s life—the nurturing environment, family support, and upbringing that shape a person at their core. Billie was destined to receive profound love and support from her family with Jupiter, the greater benefic, dignified in this position. It can show someone who gains a lot of strength and growth from their roots, or who sees family as a source of wisdom and stability. This is often someone who’s emotionally generous and deeply values feeling safe and grounded.

And in her case, that’s exactly what we see. While Billie is adored by millions of fans worldwide, her truest and most enduring supporters are her parents, Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell. Their devotion to their children went far beyond what most would consider typical parental support. Both parents put their acting careers on hold to fully invest in raising Billie and her brother Finneas, prioritizing their creativity and individuality from the very beginning. They even chose to homeschool their children, fostering an environment of artistic freedom and experimental learning that clearly helped shape Billie’s distinctive voice and artistry.

Their sacrifices were both practical and profound. For example, when the family lived in a modest Los Angeles home, Maggie and Patrick slept on a futon in the living room so Billie and Finneas could each have their own bedrooms—a symbolic gesture that perfectly reflects Jupiter’s generosity and selfless devotion in the 4th house.

Even after Billie’s meteoric rise to fame, her parents remain an integral part of her life and career. The family continues to operate as “Team Eilish,” with Maggie managing daily schedules and Patrick lending his carpentry and technical skills to ensure everything runs smoothly on tour. Billie even shares a podcast, me & dad radio, with her father, highlighting just how close their bond remains.

The gratitude Billie and Finneas feel for their parents speaks volumes. People writes that Finneas calls his mother “our North Star and moral compass across the board in our lives,” while Billie describes Maggie as “so selfless” and filled with a kind of love that “shocks” her with its depth. These reflections perfectly mirror the essence of Jupiter exalted in the 4th—an upbringing rooted in love, wisdom, and generosity that continues to nourish her even as she navigates the demands of global stardom.

Strength in Sensitivity: Jupiter Trine Mars

Jupiter is in a close trine (within 5 degrees) to Mars, her chart ruler, which is a really beautiful and supportive aspect that brings together two planets in water signs—Cancer and Pisces—which means it’s all about emotional sensitivity, intuition, and inner life. And since it's a trine, these two energies flow together naturally and easily. This Jupiter-Mars trine suggests Billie has a kind of quiet emotional resilience. Even if she deals with inner struggles (12th house Mars can bring periods of depression, feeling isolated, or overwhelmed), Jupiter in the 4th gives her a steady emotional foundation to lean on—likely her family, which we know she’s incredibly close to. That Jupiter acts like a supportive hand on Mars’ shoulder, helping her work through tough emotions or mental health challenges.

It also shows that her inner world and outer support system are in sync. She might actually use solitude or emotional processing as a source of strength and creativity, rather than something to escape from. And with Mars ruling her 1st house (identity/self) and 8th house (emotional depth, therapy, transformation), this trine could show a strong inner drive to heal, reflect, and grow—even if that process happens privately.

The interplay between her 1st, 4th, and 12th houses paints a clear picture: her struggles with mental health are not hidden or ignored but acknowledged and actively worked through. This is someone who may feel things deeply, who might struggle with hidden emotions or inner tension, but who has a lot of tools—supportive family, therapy, self-awareness—to deal with it. And because it’s a trine, she probably doesn’t have to fight to access that support. It’s there when she needs it. Her emotional and mental health journey may be ongoing, but this aspect suggests she’s not facing it alone.

Disconnecting to Stay Grounded: The Moon-Jupiter Divide

It’s not all perfect, though—Jupiter isn’t operating at full power here. Even though it’s exalted and in a fortunate house (4th), and Venus, the other benefic, is its triplicity and bound lord, it’s missing a hugely important connection: it’s not in aspect to its domicile lord, the Moon, located in the 11th House of Good Spirit, her audience and community, her fans, her people. In traditional astrology, that’s significant. The Moon rules Cancer, where Jupiter is placed, but the two are in what’s called aversion—they can’t “see” each other by aspect. This means the Moon can’t really provide support or resources for Jupiter to carry out its goals. So while Jupiter has a lot of potential and is in a great position, it’s a bit on its own.

This lack of connection between the ruler of her inner world (the Moon) and the benefic planet sitting in her house of home and emotional safety (Jupiter) is telling. There’s a symbolic disconnect between her need for emotional grounding and the spaces where she interacts with the public, particularly her fans and social networks.

If we consider the 11th house as representing Billie’s audience, fans, social media presence, and broader network, it becomes clear that this is an area she both values and carefully distances herself from. Her Moon in Aquarius shows she has a deep emotional connection to her fanbase, often treating them like extended family. Yet, the Moon's aversion to Jupiter in the 4th suggests that this emotional openness doesn’t always support her sense of inner peace—it may actually disrupt it.

Billie has long been candid with fans, sharing intimate and vulnerable parts of her life—from addressing body-shaming and living with Tourette’s to discussing her sexuality and struggles with depression. There’s a raw authenticity in how she connects with people. But at the same time, she’s repeatedly stepped away from social media, calling it a toxic space. According to People, she’s even described her relationship with it as addictive, saying, “It’s my cigarettes. It’s really a problem.”

This speaks to the Moon in Aquarius's desire for connection, but on her own terms—emotionally engaged, but also emotionally detached when needed. Despite the joy she finds in fan interactions and the creativity they reflect back at her (especially through concert clips and edits), she admits that it can quickly become overwhelming. Being too plugged in drags her into a mental and emotional spiral, leaving her feeling, in her own words, “all fucked up” and “stuck.” (People)

So while the 4th house Jupiter might want peace, comfort, and a sanctuary away from the world, the 11th house Moon keeps her tied—emotionally—to a vast digital audience. The aversion between these two planets highlights the ongoing tension between her private emotional needs and her public emotional availability. It’s no wonder she periodically retreats: it’s not just about self-care, it’s about retaining emotional stability.

There’s so much to unpack in Billie’s chart that I had to divide this post about her natal chart into 2. In part 2, we’ll look at how important her brother Finneas is in her life, her significant 9th house planets, and her Midheaven. You won't want to miss it!
