The Astrology Behind Liam Gallagher’s Remarkable 2017-2018

2017-2018 stands out in Liam’s life for two reasons: his solo career success and him meeting his daughter Molly for the first time after two decades.

Using the ancient Hellenistic technique of annual profections to determine the predominant life themes for a given year, we find that on September 21, 2017, at 45 years old, Liam Gallagher entered into a 10th house profection year. This places emphasis on matters related to public life, reputation, career, and one’s visible legacy—all areas governed by the 10th house. This particular profection year also activated his Virgo stellium of the planets Mars, Sun, and Mercury as well as his Midheaven in the 10th.

The Lord of the Year is Mercury, by virtue of Virgo being the sign in the 10th house. As established in Part 1 of this series, Liam’s natal Mercury is strong and well-placed, being in domicile in Virgo in the powerful 10th house and in an exact square with Jupiter, his chart ruler and greater benefic. In his book Hellenistic Astrology - The Study of Fate and Fortune, Chris Brennan writes, “whatever the planet promises in the natal chart will manifest when it becomes activated as time-lord. If the planet promises good things because it is well-situated in the chart, then good things will be delivered when it becomes activated.”

Moreover, Mercury holds particular significance in Liam’s chart, positioned at the anaretic 29th degree—a placement that traditionally denotes a planet operating with heightened intensity, finality, or karmic weight. Its prominence makes any annual activation especially potent.

In working with profections, astrologers pay close attention to: (1) transits of the time-lord of the Year (Mercury, in this case), (2) transits to the natal position of the time-lord, (3) planets transiting the profected sign and house, particularly transits to natal planets and angles in the profected house (Mars, Sun, Mercury and the MC in Virgo in the 10th in this case), and (4) other houses ruled by the time-lord—here, Gemini in the 7th house, linking in themes of relationships, recognition, and personal alliances.

Taking all this into consideration, the three most important planets for Liam at this time are Mercury, his time-lord, Mars, one of the planets in his 10th-house-stellium and ruler of his 5th house, and Venus, which was transiting his 7th house in Gemini that year.

A quick note on Liam’s Mars: since he was born during the day, Mars is considered his more challenging malefic—traditionally the more difficult of the two malefic planets in a day chart. However, he doesn’t experience the harshest expressions of Mars, thanks to several mitigating factors.

Mars is placed in the positive and visible 10th house, conjunct the Midheaven, which gives it prominence and purpose. It's conjunct Mercury, so Mars is connected to its domicile lord as opposed to being in aversion. It’s also applying to a square with the benefic Jupiter, offering some balance and support. Importantly, Mars isn’t combust by the Sun and is in its own bound, meaning it’s “in its chariot”—a condition that protects and dignifies the planet.

As a result, Liam’s Mars functions more constructively, channeling its intensity in ways that contribute to his public drive and career ambition, rather than simply causing trouble.

Solo Career Success

So when Liam turned 45 on September 21, 2017, themes related to career, public life, and recognition were activated. The momentum leading up to his 2018 success had already begun a few years earlier. In a 2016 interview with Q magazine, he revealed plans to release solo material in 2017, though he downplayed it as a solo career—explaining he simply wanted to share a backlog of songs he had written over the years.

His debut solo album, As You Were, was released on October 6, 2017 and quickly gained traction. It shot to Number 1 in the UK charts on October 13, 2017. On that day, transit Mars was exactly conjunct his natal Mars (making it a Mars return which happens every 2.5 years) and was applying to a conjunction with his MC, his natal Sun and Mercury. These planets represent things like identity, motivation, communication, and life direction, so this alignment gave a phenomenal boost to his career and public presence.

Mars also rules Liam Gallagher’s 5th house, which governs creativity, self-expression, and entertainment—highlighting a clear link between his artistic output and his rising solo success. Notably, on the day it was announced that his album debuted at Number 1, transiting Venus was exactly conjunct his natal Sun and Midheaven, and applying to a conjunction with his natal Mercury.

His natal Venus, positioned in the 9th house of travel, rules both his 6th house of work and daily routine and his 11th house of audience, networks, and community. Fittingly, later that same month, he announced a series of concerts across the UK.

Altogether, the astrology of October 2017 powerfully reflected and supported his ascent as a solo artist.

By 2018, the album had been certified platinum in the UK and became the ninth fastest-selling debut of the 2010s. That same year, he began working on his second album, Why Me? Why Not., and received a Brit Award nomination for Best British Male Solo Artist.

In essence, 2017-2018—under the activation of his 10th house—marked the solidification of Liam’s return to music as a successful solo artist. It was a year of public recognition, career momentum, and laying the foundation for his continued success.

Liam’s Previous 10th House Profection Years

With annual profections, similar life themes often resurface in 12-year cycles—especially when the activated house is a significant area of the natal chart. For instance, if that house contains a stellium, as it does in Liam’s chart, those years tend to stand out even more. In his case, 10th house activations are especially important, and annual profections help highlight just how pivotal those years can be.

One such year was in 2005-2006, where a 33-year-old Liam went on tour with Oasis in promotion of their album Don’t Believe The Truth, and according to Wikipedia, “the tour would be the group's most successful as it would go on without any major incidents like on the band's prior tours.” In October 2005, Oasis won Best Album and the People's Choice Award at the Q Magazine Awards.

12 years earlier, in 1993–1994, Liam was 21 years old and in a 10th house profection year. And sure enough, this was the period Oasis exploded onto the UK music scene. Just after Liam’s 21st birthday, on October 22, 1993, Oasis signed their first record deal—a defining moment for the band. They received an advance of £40,000 and committed to releasing six studio albums with Creation Records, under the umbrella of Sony Music. (Oasis Timeline)

In February 1994, they kicked off their first world tour, which would last 14 months. By mid-1994, their rise to fame was unstoppable. Just weeks before their Glastonbury appearance in June, they landed their first NME cover, boldly headlined “What the world is waiting for.”

That summer, they released a string of iconic singles—Supersonic, Shakermaker, and Live Forever—culminating in the launch of their legendary debut album Definitely Maybe. It shot straight to number 1 on the UK charts within a week.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

Molly Moorish

In 2018, another pivotal moment in Liam Gallagher’s life occurred when he met his daughter, Molly Moorish, for the first time—when she was 20 years old. Molly is the daughter of singer Lisa Moorish, with whom Liam had an affair in 1998, during his marriage to Patsy Kensit. “The kid I haven’t seen,” he told GQ in 2017. “We’ll see one day, but, no, not seen her. But if I met her, she’d be cool. She’s welcome in my world and that, you know what I mean? Without a doubt. But I just ain’t met her because her mam’s... Listen, we don’t work. We don’t get on.

But less than a year later, that meeting happened. Although the exact date of their first encounter isn’t definitively confirmed, multiple sources provide a likely timeframe. On May 24, 2018, the BBC reported: “It is thought the meeting took place at the London Stadium on Tuesday, where Gallagher was supporting the Rolling Stones.” This places one significant meeting on May 22, 2018.

However, according to The Mirror, Liam had a secret first meeting with his teenage daughter two weeks before their Rolling Stones encounter, pointing to an earlier, more private reunion around May 8, 2018. A June 2019 article by Metro later confirmed that their first meeting took place in a pub, describing it as an emotional moment: “Yeah, man, there were tears and all that…. It’s a shame it didn’t happen earlier, but you can’t live in the past.

He’s right of course, and as the saying goes: the right timing isn’t always our timing.

These accounts indicate that May 2018 marked a major reconciliation and emotional milestone in Liam’s personal life—one that carried both private significance and public visibility.

Liam’s first meeting with his daughter Molly—a deeply personal yet publicly symbolic event—underscores how Mercury, as time-lord, was mediating a pivotal integration of personal legacy (5th house themes through transit) into his public narrative (10th house). The involvement of Mercury, planet of communication and reconciliation, further speaks to the significance of this long-overdue connection coming into conscious, visible expression.

On May 8, 2018, transiting Mercury was located in his 5th house, which traditionally governs children, creativity, and legacy. At that time, Mercury was in an exact square with the natal lunar Nodes, nearly down to the minute. In Hellenistic astrology, the Nodes (particularly in their capacity as eclipse points) are considered inherently disruptive, often associated with karmic disjunctions or moments of destabilization that demand integration. A square between Mercury—the significator of communication, cognition, and narrative framing—and the Nodes introduces a marked tension in the native’s communicative and perceptual faculties, often manifesting as a fated encounter or a moment where dialogue and understanding must bridge a karmic divide. The 5th house placement further underscores the symbolic reactivation of the paternal role and the reclamation of a severed or latent lineage.

Now let’s look at transiting Venus at the time of Liam’s first meeting with Molly. What does Venus signify in this context? According to the 9th-century astrologer Abu Maʿshar, Venus represents love for children, affection for others, and the expression of love—making it especially relevant here. Venus also symbolizes the feminine. In May 2018, transiting Venus was in Gemini, a Mercury-ruled sign, and was moving through Liam’s 7th house—the house traditionally associated with one-on-one relationships and personal bonds. This placement highlights the potential for meaningful, heartfelt connection—particularly in forming new or renewed relationships. Transiting Venus was applying to a conjunction with his natal Saturn, while simultaneously forming an exact trine to his natal Uranus.

The Venus–Saturn conjunction suggests a period marked by a more serious, reflective, and mature approach to relationships. This transit often highlights themes of responsibility, emotional boundaries, and the desire for stability—particularly within long-standing or overdue relational dynamics. In this context, it speaks to the emotional gravity of reconnecting with a daughter he had never met, and the weight of integrating her into his life in a meaningful, lasting way.

At the same time, the Venus–Uranus trine adds an element of openness, emotional spontaneity, and relational breakthrough. This harmonious aspect can catalyze unexpected yet welcome shifts in how one relates to others, encouraging authentic expression and a willingness to break from the past. Together, these Venus transits symbolize a profound rebalancing in Liam’s relational sphere—blending structure and seriousness with the freshness of new emotional beginnings.

Looking once again at Liam’s activated 10th house, we see more signs pointing to the important moment when he finally met Molly. At the time, Mars was moving through his 2nd house, which relates to self-worth and personal values, and was making a strong, supportive trine to his natal Mars, Sun, Mercury and Midheaven—symbols of identity, drive, communication and life direction. Mars also rules his 5th house, which represents children, showing a clear connection to fatherhood. On top of that, Mercury—the planet ruling the year for him—was itself in his 5th house, adding focus to themes of children and meaningful communication.

Although Liam had long hoped to meet his daughter and endured the pain of two decades without contact, the planetary alignments of May 2018 suggest that this was the right moment—astrologically speaking—for their long-overdue reconnection.

In part 3 of this series, we'll look at Liam's astrocartography and how it relates to his career.
