Oasis was one of my top favorite bands in the '90s, right up there with Nirvana. As a young girl navigating a difficult chapter—having moved across continents and trying to adjust to an entirely new and unfamiliar culture—their music became a lifeline. It offered me an escape: a way into a world where nothing else mattered, where I could lose myself in the sound and feel, even for a moment, that anything was possible. Oasis gave me a sense of freedom and helped me believe in something greater than the day-to-day struggles of life. Their music carried me through feelings of alienation and disillusionment, and in them, I felt like I’d found my voice—my spokesperson band. So when I had the idea of starting this blog series about natal chart analyses, the first person that naturally came to mind was none other than Oasis' lead singer, Liam Gallagher (also because of his highly-rated birth time).
Liam—alongside his brother Noel—is the unmistakable voice of Oasis. Known for his larger-than-life personality and unapologetic attitude, Liam was born on September 21, 1972, in Manchester, England, at 12:58 PM (Rodden Rating: A).
Jupiterian Personality
In a 1996 televised interview on The Late Late Show, his mother Peggy described him as “a bit fiery at times” (YouTube). That fiery nature is well reflected in his astrological chart: Sagittarius rising, with his chart ruler, Jupiter, powerfully placed in the 1st house. Notably, Jupiter sits at the anaretic 29th degree—a critical and often intense placement that adds urgency and emphasis to the planet’s influence. This amplifies Jupiter’s fiery nature, giving Liam a bold, larger-than-life presence that’s impossible to ignore.
Jupiter in the 1st house also forms a tight square to his Virgo stellium in the 10th house, suggesting a dynamic tension between his expansive, free-spirited personality and the detail-oriented demands of public life and career. This aspect may reflect the push-pull between his rebellious image and the structured world of fame and responsibility.
Born during the day, Jupiter is considered his greater benefic in traditional astrology, further enhancing its significance in his chart. It strengthens his innate confidence, charisma, and philosophical bent—qualities that define much of his public persona. The fire in him is unmistakable: intense, expressive, and driven by a restless quest for meaning, truth, and attention.
Jupiter is traditionally considered a benefic planet, but what exactly does it symbolize? According to 2nd-century astrologer Vettius Valens, Jupiter represents abundance, freedom, wealth, honors, and brotherhood. It’s the largest planet in the solar system—so enormous it could contain all the other planets combined—which makes it a natural symbol of expansion, vastness, and excess. In astrology, Jupiter is linked with pleasure and indulgence, a stark contrast to the restraint and discipline demanded by the malefics, Saturn and Mars. Jupiterians often revel in life’s pleasures, and Liam certainly did in his earlier years. As The Express puts it, the “legendary party animal” was once notorious for “epic accounts of excessive drinking, drug escapades, and scrapes.” (Express article)
With Liam, Jupiter’s influence isn’t just about excess—it’s also about expansive thinking and generosity. His abundance shows up in his mindset as much as in his lifestyle. In a 2018 interview, he said: "I think big, man, all the time. The young me would probably go: 'Yeah, mate, should have been a bit bigger.'" (NME) That kind of grand, visionary outlook is classic Jupiter.
He also embodies the generous side of Jupiter. Despite his rebellious image, he has consistently met his child support obligations for his four children—even when the requested amounts have been steep. Beyond his family, he’s extended that generosity globally, pledging a significant donation to a hospital in Thailand and supporting efforts to care for street dogs there. His Jupiterian nature isn’t just loud and larger-than-life—it’s also giving.
Neptunian Escapism
Liam Gallagher’s well-documented penchant for excess can be astrologically linked to Neptune’s close proximity to his Ascendant—within just three degrees. Neptune is often associated with escapism, illusion, and substance use, especially when it challenges key emotional or personal planets. In Liam’s chart, Neptune forms mostly harmonious aspects with Mercury, the Sun, and the Midheaven, suggesting a creative and charismatic public persona. However, its square to the Moon tells a more complex story.
The Moon represents emotional needs, comfort, and one’s internal life. A hard aspect like the Neptune-Moon square can indicate emotional vulnerability, confusion, or an urge to numb difficult feelings. In Liam’s case, this may have manifested as a tendency to use substances as a coping mechanism—an attempt to escape the pressures of fame and unresolved emotional undercurrents.
During the 1990s, his heavy drug use and erratic behavior were a staple of the tabloids, feeding into the mythos of the self-destructive rock star. But time, it seems, has brought some clarity and restraint. Despite the difficult Moon square, Neptune’s supportive aspects to other planets hint at the potential for personal growth and discipline, which Liam appears to have gradually embraced.
In a 2022 interview with Far Out Magazine, he reflected on his current habits:
“I don’t drink as much as I used to. Don’t smoke weed; bores the shit out of me. I smoke cigarettes but not a load – last week, I didn’t smoke any! I’ve got a bit of discipline. But yeah, every now and then, it depends on what’s going on. I know for a fact I shouldn’t because they’re shit at the moment. It’s like Ashcroft said, they just don’t work anymore.”
Discipline—something that seemed virtually absent in the early Oasis years—has now become part of his routine.
“I get up very early, man, five o’clock. I go for a run at six, just to have a bit of discipline.”
It’s a notable evolution for someone whose chart reflects both the lure of escape and the potential for grounded transformation. Neptune near the Ascendant may always color his worldview with a dreamlike edge, but with maturity, Liam appears to be finding a way to stay present without needing to disappear.
Saturnian Brotherhood
Valens associates the planet Jupiter with brotherhood—an astrological insight that isn’t widely known. Brotherhood has indeed played a significant role in Liam Gallagher’s life. In addition to Noel, Liam has an older brother, Paul, who has managed to maintain a close bond with both siblings, particularly with Liam. (Source: Daily Record)
However, it’s Liam’s relationship with Noel that has become the stuff of rock legend. Their infamous and often volatile dynamic has gone down in music history as one of the most iconic rivalries between brothers. Since Oasis's inception, tensions between the two have made frequent headlines. In 1994, Noel reportedly walked out on the band for the first time after Liam threw a tambourine at him. Over the years, their bickering only intensified, eventually leading to the band’s dramatic split in 2009.
The final blow came in Paris, just before a scheduled performance. A backstage altercation erupted, during which Liam allegedly swung Noel's guitar “like an axe” before smashing it. The show was abruptly canceled, the tour called off, and Oasis officially disbanded. At the time, Noel declared, “I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer,” as reported by The Sun.
Yet, after 15 years of estrangement, it was Liam who reportedly made the first move toward reconciliation, calling Noel and ending the feud. Now, the Gallagher brothers are back together on a sold-out reunion tour—a full-circle moment few could have predicted.
In Liam’s natal chart, the 3rd house—traditionally linked to siblings—is ruled by Saturn, which is placed in Gemini in his 7th house, the domain of one-on-one relationships. This Saturn is in a sign-based opposition to Jupiter in the 1st house of self. This already suggests that Liam’s connections with siblings may take on the intensity and complexity typically reserved for close partnerships. While we don’t have Noel’s exact birth time, we do know that both his Sun and Mercury are in Gemini. In synastry, this places Noel’s core identity (Sun) and communication style (Mercury) within Liam’s 7th house. This overlay powerfully underscores their bond—not just as brothers, but as significant figures in each other’s lives, deeply intertwined in both personal and professional partnerships. The sibling connection is intensified by the 7th house's emphasis on cooperation, conflict, and commitment, all of which have defined Liam and Noel's famously turbulent relationship.
Liam’s Saturn forms both challenging and harmonious aspects with other planets. Most notably, it squares Mars and trines Uranus. The Saturn-Mars square reflects underlying tension—a classic signature of conflict, where the need for control and structure (Saturn) clashes with impulsive action and assertiveness (Mars). This can manifest as power struggles and repeated confrontations, which mirrors the volatile dynamic between the brothers.
On the other hand, the trine between Saturn and Uranus suggests the potential for constructive evolution. It points to a capacity for blending the old with the new—integrating personal freedom, innovation, and creative change (Uranus) with tradition and responsibility (Saturn). That balance, when achieved, allows for enduring but dynamic relationships. Doesn’t that track with the brothers’ history—marked by dramatic fallouts, yet also moments of reinvention and reconciliation?
Ultimately, with Saturn—the planet of time, endurance, and karmic lessons—ruling Liam’s 3rd house, it’s no surprise that his relationship with Noel has been long, complicated, and full of growth. Their bond may bend, but it rarely breaks—and the story is far from over.
Their story is a rich and complicated tapestry of brotherly love, rivalry, and ultimately, reconciliation. As Liam put it in a 2022 interview with The Guardian, “Would I give Noel a kidney? Without a doubt. Of course I would. He’s my brother, man, and I love him.”
Mercurian Expression
He's one of the best-known voices in rock n' roll. It’s his distinct vocal style that truly defines the band’s sound. He completely embraced his unique musical quirks and turned them into a signature. The way he often starts a note with his mouth almost closed around a vowel, then stretches it through his nasal passage—it’s a technique that feels effortless coming from him. What sounds iconic in Liam’s delivery might come off as awkward or forced in anyone else. "Without [my] voice [Noel] would still be ironing Clint Boon's knickers." (Twitter September 2020)
What in Liam Gallagher’s chart accounts for his iconic voice and unforgettable way of expressing himself? Beyond the influence of Jupiter, it's Mercury—the planet of communication and expression—that stands out as the most powerful force, and in more ways than one. Mercury is in its domicile in Virgo, placed in the 10th house of public recognition and career. It closely conjoins his Sun, the Midheaven (MC), and Pluto, with Mars nearby within five degrees—all clustered around the anaretic 29th degree, a position often associated with heightened intensity and urgency.
Planets at 29 degrees carry a kind of climactic, concentrated energy. In Liam’s case, Mercury here is especially potent. While Sun-Mercury conjunctions are relatively common—given that Mercury never strays far from the Sun—his Mercury escapes combustion because it's in its own sign. In astrological terms, it’s "in its chariot," protected by its strong dignity in Virgo. This grants Liam a sharp, articulate mind, capable of channeling thoughts with remarkable precision.
In astrology, Mercury is the messenger—the intermediary between the Sun (the mind) and the rest of the chart. A Sun-Mercury conjunction often points to a natural communicator, someone who can articulate internal thoughts with clarity. But when you add the intensity of Pluto and the aggression of Mars, you get a far more charged configuration. This Mercury doesn’t just speak—it provokes, asserts, and cuts through. Mars-Mercury aspects are associated with sharp tongues, verbal aggression, and a bold, no-holds-barred communication style. It’s no wonder Liam is famous for his unfiltered remarks and razor-sharp one-liners. His voice—both in tone and expression—is unmistakably his own: piercing, raw, and impossible to ignore.
In a Vogue "73 Questions" interview, Liam Gallagher shared that his favorite song lyrics of all time are from Oasis’ own: "I need to be myself, I can be no one else / I'm feeling supersonic, give me gin and tonic." These lines speak volumes about his identity—unapologetic, singular, and intensely self-defined. Astrologically, this resonates with his Sun conjunct the Midheaven (MC), an aspect that signifies a powerful alignment between his personal identity and public persona. For Liam, there is no clear divide between who he is and how the world sees him.
Career success isn’t just important—it’s essential to his sense of self. Conversely, failure would cut deeply, potentially undermining his self-worth. This tight Sun-MC conjunction can also manifest in less flattering ways. Traits like pride, arrogance, and a sometimes inflated ego—qualities he's famously known for—can create resistance and conflict, ultimately hindering the very success he's driven to achieve.
Parents & Early Home Life
Let’s take a closer look at Liam Gallagher’s 4th house, which traditionally governs the home, family, and parental influences. Media reports—and Liam himself—have spoken of his father's abusive behavior. While Liam has stated that his father never physically harmed him, both of his older brothers, Paul and Noel, were reportedly subjected to violence. When Liam was just seven years old, his mother made the life-altering decision to pack up their belongings and leave, taking her three sons to a new home elsewhere in Manchester—without informing their father of their whereabouts.
Astrologically, Liam’s 4th house is in Pisces, ruled by Jupiter, which is placed in his 1st house. Jupiter forms a tight inferior square with the Sun—a planet traditionally associated with the father. In this square, the Sun is the overcoming planet, implying a dominant or oppressive influence. This tension between the self (Jupiter in the 1st) and the father figure (the Sun) mirrors the imbalance of power and conflict within his early home environment.
At the same time, the Moon—symbolizing the mother in traditional astrology—is located in the 4th house itself and forms a sign-based sextile with its ruling planet, Jupiter. This placement underscores the central role his mother played in shaping his emotional foundation and home life. Her decisive action to remove the family from an abusive situation reflects the protective and nurturing qualities of the Moon rooted in the most private part of Liam’s natal chart and his life.
In Part 2 of this series, we’ll explore the astrological timing of a few key events in Liam Gallagher’s life.
